Cinema Blend: George Lucas Planning A New Star Wars Trilogy?

  • Jackytreehornn · 2 months ago
Chaotician, I think you just supported Josh Tyler's point. Tyler wants to make sure none of Lucas' friends are involved, because they all share similar views on filmmaking. The fact that Lucas and Spielberg worked so closely on the last Indiana Jones is probably why it sucked so hard (Spielberg directed and produced and Lucas wrote the screen story and produced). I think if a new Star Wars Trilogy is on its way, Lucas needs to back off and just be the "ideas man" he was with episodes V and VI. Lucas has incredible ideas, he just needs other people to get them off the ground.

I know that Spielberg directed and produced. But my point is, look at all the other movies Spielberg has directed. You're really going to compare the directorial styles of Spielberg to that of Lucas and come out with the idea that they're the same?
  • Jackytreehornn · 2 months ago
You're right. The directing styles of Lucas and Spielberg are completely different. The main difference is Spielberg is way better than Lucas. He gets better performances from his actors and the films actually follow story structure: exposition, rising action, turning point, (falling action) and resolution. I just think their collaborative effort on Kingdom of the Crystal Skull failed. Sure it was a fun movie, but when stacked against the previous 3, it barely beats out Temple of Doom.

I can't believer you think Crystal Skull is better than Doom. Personally I really like Doom until they get inside the Temple then it's all downhill from there. Crystal Skull had no good parts.

I think the involvement of Mrs. Spielberg and Short Round as the Asian sidekick made it campy and slightly racist. Plus they made the mistake a lot of second film installments make: let's make the protagonist super cool and untouchable!
There were some good parts in Doom but I'd still have to mark it lower than Crystal Skull.

Urgh... exactly what would the project be about then? A sequel? A prequel? Spin-off? Remake? Did they mention any of that stuff? Hell, I'm not excited at all. Lucas directing or not.

Your information's a bit off. First, the LAST two original Star Wars movies were collaborations, the first was almost completely Lucas. And second, Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was by no means Spielberg's fault; Lucas was in on that one too. That's kind of ridiculous to want Spielberg far away from Star Wars.

you're a fucking douchebag. enjoy reality faggot.

God you're such a douche. Lucas directed Star Wars, which is one of the greatest films of all time. Revenge of the sith was awesome. Despite you campaign of hatred towards Lucas, which is so tired and predictable at this point, many of us really dug Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Give the man some credit, he created some of the most popular characters of all time.

Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was one of the worst movies I have ever seen. It was also the only time I ever wanted to leave a movie theater 15 minutes into a movie. I stayed because I said it has to get better right? Wrong. Just the name alone screams bad film.

No doubt, George Lucas is a great ideas man. Really he's the perfect producer. Director though? Writer? Come on, do you really want another Phantom Menace?
  • billy · 2 months ago
well no, but not all of phantom menace was bad. first star wars i saw. only thing i remember when i first saw it, was when Darth Maul was sliced in half. So at least the action was good.

i remmeber varioius action scenes and teh ending with the marriage in the second. didn't realized how bad it was until i watched it again a couple months ago.

third i rember seeing how it waqs only 4 years ago and i loved it. action was fantastic and the emtoins with anikan's progression to the dark side and his conflict with Obi wan was amazing. finishing off with my favorite fight scene of teh trilogy.

after that i went on to watch the original trilogy which are better story wise for sure. i sort of watched the 6th though. couldn't pay attention much because i was being distracted. it definitely had its flaws. stupid ewoks.

episode V is by far the best of the whole series. i even got myself into the mindset where i didn't know Darth Vader was luke's father.

so in the end here is how i like the movies

    1. Empire Strikes Back
    2. Revenge of the Sith and New Hope are tied
    3. Return of the Jedi
    4. Phantom Menace (just for the end)
    5. Attack of the Clones (no redeeming qualities and completely fails to live up to the clone war hype from the original trilogy)

Sweet opening argument... Anyway, of course fanboys liked Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. It was fun to see Indy back with his hat on and the whip, but it still wasn't great. Aliens in Indiana Jones? Give me a break. People enjoyed the religious material in Raiders of the Lost Ark and the Last Crusade because people have actually heard of archaeologists searching for those relics and the Crusades. Who cares about people searching for ancient aliens? And how the hell do you survive a nuclear blast in a refrigerator? There's a reason why by far the worst reviewed Indiana Jones movie. Star Wars, on the other hand, is a great movie. There are a lot of better films that would knock it out of the greatest films of all time category though (Lawrence of Arabia, The Godfather, Casablanca, Gone with the Wind, The Bridge on the River Kwai, On the Waterfront, The Maltese Falcon, Raging Bull, etc....), but that's not what we're talking about.
I'm not campaigning against George Lucas' involvement or him as a person... he has to be involved. He has brilliant ideas and has created characters that will never die in popular culture. I just think he's a crappy director and he can't write material people can relate to or believe. I mean, honestly, did you really buy the love story between Anikan and Padme? The only reason I believed they were in love is because it was predestined in the original trilogy. It had to happen, so I just went with it. Or how about how lame and quickly the Darth Vader thing wrapped up? He just became Vader in 10 minutes of screen time, with no thought or explanation for why he was named Vader. If episodes I, II and III were a stand-alone trilogy, and IV, V and VI were yet to come, I bet public opinion would be this: don't make another three films please.
  • cyguration · 2 months ago
It's true the Vader parts were rushed in EP3...that whole transition could have been its own movie. Nevertheless, I think a lot of people don't give Lucas credit for Episode III...next to Episode V it was the best out of all six movies.

The opening space battle was just epic and it was great how he intertwined the executive order to wipe out the Jedi using the Republic army...it really helped explain why people didn't care much for them in the original three movies and how the Republic troops became Empire Stormtroopers.

I always imagined, though, he made the prequal movies bad enough so no one would ask for more but good enough to keep fans satisifed.

They should just leave the franchise alone, though.

You're reporting on a rumor by Market Saw?!?!?! REALLY?!?!?! The same Market Saw that announced that "The Hobbit" was being planned as a trilogy and being filmed in 3D, which completely contradicted everything that had been reported straight from Peter Jackson and Guillermo del Toro? Don't believe ANYTHING you hear from Market Saw!
